One of our four sacred ritual plants is Sweetgrass. We are pure Native Indian on my mother’s side. My Grandmother has many spiritual gifts and these gifts, practices and knowledge of our ancestor’s ways were passed down to me. Sweetgrass symbolizes healing, peace, and spirituality in many Native cultures, braids of sweetgrass are sometimes left as offerings at graves and sacred sites. I use a small amount when making dreamcatchers and always have a braid of it up on a wall near the entrance of my home next a photo of my Grandmother. One of the earliest uses for this wonderful grass by my ancestors was traditional basket-weaving. As a medicine woman it is important that I always have some to hand.

In the ancient stories of some tribes, such as the Ojibwe, Cree, Anishinaabe First Nation (Woodland Indians, to name but a few) sweetgrass is believed to be the eldest of all plants, the sacred hair of O’gushnan, Mother Earth and is often braided; the three sections representing ✨mind, ✨body, and ✨soul. Some First Nations believe the three sections of the braid represent ✨love, ✨kindness and ✨honesty. Whenever we take anything from Mother Earth we sprinkle a little tobacco (a particular kind) and say a prayer and give thanks.

Some may refer to Sweetgrass as; Seneca Grass, Vanilla Grass, Manna grass, Holy Grass or Buffalo Grass. The smell can vary from musky to sweet or fresh as harvests differ from time to time. It is often burned after using white sage to call in good spirits/energy and blessings. It is one of the herbs frequently included in medicine bundles and amulets. Plains Indian people used to chew sweetgrass during ritual fasts, it was also used as a medicinal herb in some tribes. Sweetgrass still holds great spiritual importance to many Natives today and our traditions have been spread around the world (typically burned as an incense, not chewed or eaten). There are many medicinal applications for sweetgrass as well, ranging from treating colds to treatment of venereal infections. Soaked in water it is used as an eye wash and hair tonic (one of our beauty secrets 😉)

Each stick/Wand has been blessed, crystal charged to enhance it’s natural abilities and carry your prayers/wishes to spirit (so think about or speak on what you wish to call into your life and prepare to manifest). I have cut each braid to 4 1/4 inches. It will be wrapped in a specific method used in ancient times by my ancestors to prevent the exchange of energies while in transit on its way to you.
